Gene Kelly (Master Woodworker/Craftsman) is featured in the Jan. 2018 issue of Atherton Living Magazine. We don’t get the privelage of interviewing alot of males on our blog and certainly not woodworking guru’s. We couldn’t let Gene slip by without asking him a few questions of our own.
Where do you find inspiration for your craft projects?
I build furniture based on the naturally occurring lines and curves found in nature. e.g. Trees and the human form.
What was your first craft project?
The first that comes to mind was a balsa wood airplane when I was about 6 years old.
Who taught you how to craft?
I have taken information from many sources. For the most part I am self taught.
What is your favorite craft project so far?
The dining set that I am building now. Soon I will have a new favorite.
Have you always worked in the same craft medium or do you like to use several materials to craft?
I work in wood as a general rule, but I sometimes incorporate metal and glass.
What are you currently working on?
I usually have more than one project going at a time. Currently, I am working on a sculpted dining room set of Black Walnut.(Table, chairs and banquette bench). I am also working on a sculpted mirror frame which is approximately 4 feet high and 5 feet long. I am in the beginning stages of a couple of Chinese screen as well.
How do you find time to work on your craft projects?
Rather than an avocation, it has become a vocation. This is my life.
Do you have tips for crafters just starting out?
Find your passion. Do what you are passionate about. Don’t allow people to discourage you. It is your dream not theirs.
Who are your favorite crafters?
Sam Maloof and Ray Allen
What are some craft projects you plan to do in the future?
A sculpted front door with stained glass inset. A drop leaf coffee table. A wooden bow tie. And many others.
