Nicky Avery from alcyarns.com and averylanecreations.com is our interview subject this week, We reached out to Nicky and asked her some crafty business DIY questions. This interview is about getting to know like-minded business owners who love craft and DIY too.
Where do you find inspiration for your projects? *
I find a lot of my inspiration from nature. There is so much beauty all around us.
Can you remember what was your first project? *
Yes! My very first yarn I ever dyed was in an old pot on my stove and I had no idea what I was doing but I enjoyed every minute of it.
My very first crochet project was a baby blanket for a friend. It turned out like a drunk triangle so I frogged it and gave it another go. It was ALL. Single. Crochets. ?
Who taught you how to craft? *
University of YouTube and Google
What has been your favorite project so far? *
It’s so hard to choose! I would have to say it’s a toss up between collabing with Furls Crochet and dyeing their Fall Harvest Collection and my monthly yarn club colorways. It is a new project every month that just lights me up.
Have you always worked in the same craft medium or do you like to use other materials too? *
I started out crocheting and then on a whim decided to try my hand at dyeing yarn. I do enjoy other crafts as well.
Can you share any secrets? What are you currently working on? *
I have so many secrets and I don’t mind sharing! Currently I’m looking forward to launching some fun kits I have coming in the Fall. I’m super excited because I’m collabing with a crochet designer that I have admired since I was learning to crochet.
How do you find the time to work on your projects? *
I made the time. I sacrificed a lot of my social life and almost completely cut out social media so I could make the time to pursue my passion. It allowed me to resign from my 20 year career after 10 months in to my hand dyed yarn sub box
Do you have tips for crafters and artists just starting out? *
My biggest tip is self doubt is always going to be there. Even for people that have been doing the craft for years. Just keep going. Don’t give up. Find a great community of other artists that will lift you up and encourage you and that you can do the same for.
Who are your favorite artists and why? *
Oh I have so so many! My amazing crochet friends that inspire me so much. One of my favorite yarn dyers is Montana Crochet. Her yarn colors are stunning!! My biz box buddies, Cheryl and Karen who are always there to listen and keep it real.
Everyone has that dream project they want to work on, what is yours? *
My dream project is to help other women who want t
o grow their creative businesses. I want every woman to know that she is amazing and that she can achieve her dreams.
